Lucknow au XIXe siècle: La petite Amiraan a huit ans et son père, bien que simple serviteur au sein d'une grande et prestigieuse famille, est un homme droit qui ne supporte pas l'idée même d'un mensonge. C'est ce trait de caractère qui lui vaudra l'animosité du criminel Dilawar Khan. Ne supportant pas d'être accusé de vulgaire criminel, ce dernier enlève Amiraan et la revend au propriétaire d'un "Kotha" (maison de courtisanes). Abusée, battue, emprisonnée, la belle Umrao Jaan va devoir croire en l'impossible pour retrouver la liberté.

Lucknow in the 19th century: Little Amiraan is eight years old and her father, although a simple servant in a large and prestigious family, is an upright man who cannot stand the very idea of a lie. It is this character trait that will earn him the animosity of the criminal Dilawar Khan. Unable to bear being accused of a common criminal, the latter kidnaps Amiraan and sells her to the owner of a "Kotha" (house of courtesans). Abused, beaten, imprisoned, the beautiful Umrao Jaan will have to believe in the impossible to find freedom.
