Un petit garçon, Krishna, abandonné par sa famille puis par le cirque dans lequel elle l'avait placé, se retrouve livré à lui-même dans les rues de Bombay, où la misère règne. Auprès d'enfants qui survivent comme ils peuvent, de nouvelles ou d'anciennes prostituées, d'adultes escrocs ou écorchés par la vie, Krishna croit encore pouvoir retourner chez les siens... Mais la rue est intraitable et se chargera de détruire son fol espoir, ainsi que ses derniers rêves d'enfant...

A little boy, Krishna, abandoned by his family and then by the circus in which they had placed him, finds himself left to his own devices in the streets of Bombay, where poverty reigns. Among children who survive as best they can, new or old prostitutes, adults who are crooks or worn out by life, Krishna still believes he can return to his family...
